๐งก About I AM ALS
Founded by Brian Wallach, I AM ALS accelerates a cure by driving urgent policy change. Their mission: a world without ALS. This disease is 100% fatal โ but the fight to end it is very much alive.
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It robs people of their ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. There is currently no cure.
I AM ALS was founded by Brian Wallach, who was diagnosed at age 37 and given 6 months to live. He and his wife Sandra refused to accept that timeline. Today, I AM ALS empowers patients to become advocates, pushes for federal funding, and connects the community to accelerate research.
The name "I AM ALS" opens the door to community โ allowing all of us to see ourselves as part of the ongoing struggle to relegate this disease to the dustbin of history.
ALS is a horrific disease that is 100% terminal. It takes absolutely everything from you, causing you to become a prisoner in your own body. Wayne was diagnosed with this cruel disease at 52 years old and lost his battle just 16 months later. Wayne was a husband, father of five, son, brother, and friend. He was also a proud Nassau County Police Officer who loved working in the community, making connections, and helping people. Wayne always had a joke or a smile โ even after ALS took his voice, he still managed to keep his sense of humor, always trying to put everyone at ease. He was a true advocate for ALS awareness.
